Windows 98 can only boot in safe mode When I turn my computer on (HP Pavilion 6470z), the Hewlett Packard graphic appears as normal and then this screen appears: ' Windows 98 is now starting your MS-DOS-based program. I'm using a Compaq Armada 100s laptop OS Win98SE. I'm trying to get my CDROM to work. It think the CDROM has needed driver ever since I bought it from a friend. I want to reinstall windows but the this is whats on my screen after using a boot disk: Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu ============================================ 1. I'm a novice when it comes to using DOS so try to explain things to me step by step. The CD-ROM driver (Oak Technologies) module is trying to load (indicated by the message, 'This driver is supplied.' ) but the error message you are getting is that it is unable to detect your CD-ROM drive. There are two things that must load successfully in DOS: the driver itself and the MS CD extensions (MSCDEX.EXE). Both can be loaded via the config.sys file but more typically, the driver portion is loaded in config.sys and the mscdex extensions are loaded in autoexec.bat. When DOS boots, it loads and executes all of the statements contained in config.sys first following by the commands/statements contained in autoexec.bat. The error message, 'No drives found, aborting installation', does indicate that your CD-ROM drive is either offline or is no longer working. If it is removable, try taking it out and snapping it back in. It could be something as simple as an oxidized contact. The fact that the tray in the CD drive opens and closes when you push the eject button only indicates that it is getting power and that the eject mechanism works. It does not necessarily mean that the drive itself (i.e., the electronics) is functional. You might want to check Compaq's website for your particular model and see if it requires a proprietary driver (not very likely). I could post the exact statements required in the config.sys and autoexec.bat files but they are unlikely to help you since your computer is unable to get past the drive detection phase. It would appear that your CD-ROM drive is malfunctioning or is not making contact with the IDE bus. You may want to also check your Bios IDE settings.
